Cooper's New Ride

Saturday was a happy day for Cooper. He no longer has to ride in the back seat of a sedan with his crate hanging off the seat! We bought a Honda Pilot, which has plenty of room for hauling Cooper, people and stuff. Cooper's new ride should make our holiday drive much more enjoyable too (and now we might even be able to fit a few presents in the car too!).

P.S. I have lots of photos and stories from the past month that I'll hopefully get posted soon!

Cooper’s Weekend with Mommy

Jeff headed to Las Vegas for Columbus Day weekend to celebrate his 30th birthday with his brothers, so Cooper and I had the house to ourselves. Woo hoo, party time!

Saturday evening we went to our neighborhood block party. The kids there loved playing with Cooper and he was very well-behaved even with so much food around! Here’s a photo of a girl giving lovin’ him up at the party.

For part of Jeff’s birthday present, I bought him Star Wars cookie cutters and pancake molds. So on Sunday afternoon, I decided I’d make a batch or two of the cookies in anticipation of Jeff's return home on Monday. They were more work than I was anticipating (not to mention that they required a two-hour dough refrigeration time), so to keep Cooper busy while I was in the kitchen I gave him a new Kong toy. You put dog food inside and he has to topple it over just right to get the food out of the keyhole. This toy definitely kept Cooper busy for at least a half hour while I was baking!

And here’s a photo of the cookies Cooper and I made -- a plate full of Yodas, storm troopers, Darth Vaders, and Boba Fetts. There were a lot of cookies, so Jeff took them to work and his coworkers ate most of them.

Puppy Class, Playdates and a Grooming

The past two weeks have been very exciting for Cooper -- he's been going to puppy class, had a couple playdates and got a haircut!

Cooper has been to two puppy classes and he's very well-behaved in class. We missed the first class while we were in New York, but it wasn't a big deal since they just learned "sit" and Cooper already knew how to sit. During the second week of class, everyone learned "down" and "come" -- another two commands we had already taught Cooper. But Cooper's still more than willing to sit or lie down over and over again just to get a treat! Here's one photo of Cooper performing in class.

Last week the class learned to retrieve a toy, which Cooper also knew already, but he didn't perform it as well in class as he does at home...probably because of all the distractions in class with other dogs, toys and treats! This week we've been teaching him stay at home and he's unbelievably good at it without much practice!

In addition to puppy class, we've also been taking Cooper to play with other dogs. Cooper spent one afternoon playing with his friends Otto and Kaya. I didn't get any good shots of them all playing together but here's a photo of the two big dogs.

And when I say the dogs played together, it was more like Cooper would find a toy to play with and then one of the other dogs would take it away from him. Cooper definitely ranked at the bottom of the totem pole at their house!

The day after his playdate with the big dogs, Cooper got a haircut. The owner of Cooper's dad Cabot and his brother Brinkley lives nearby and she gave Cooper his first grooming since we've had him. I was surprised by how much hair she cut off! He was looking extra cute after his trim, but unfortunately I forgot to take before/after photos to see the difference.

This weekend, we went to a local agility trial so that Cooper could play with his brother Brinkley and sister Abby (her name was Apricot at birth). Abby -- the only liver and white puppy in the litter -- lives in Alabama now with four other Springers and came to Georgia so that one of them could compete in the agility trial. It was exciting to see all three pups play together -- they're all so cute! In this photo, Brinkley is on the left, Cooper in the middle and Abby on the right. (It was too hard to get a good shot of all three of them!)

Jeff and I took Brinkley and Cooper for a walk around the park while we were there. Brinkley is definitely much better walking in a group than Cooper is. Cooper always wants to be in the front of the pack and run as fast as he can to get "somewhere". After our walk, we sat and watched some of the standard and jumpers agility trials. It was a lot of fun! Maybe one day Cooper will be in the ring!

Cooper's Weekend with Grandparents Vogel

This week’s entry is courtesy of Grandma Joan and Grandpa Doug who puppysat while Cooper’s parents went to Stephanie and Eric’s wedding in New York.

What do they say the best thing about being a grandparent is (even if it’s a granddog)? Giving him back to his parents!!!

Things we have learned this visit:

  1. We love dogs (and have always).
  1. Dogs love you as long as you love them, feed them, walk them and play with them (not necessarily in that order).
  1. Our decision to NOT have a dog was and still is the right decision!

We arrived Thursday afternoon to a great greeting from Cooper – really happy to meet us. Little did we know that the little puppy weighs more than 23 pounds and can jump really high. He is always very happy to play with us and leads with his teeth - puppy teeth – very sharp!!

While Cooper’s parents think he does not jump on the furniture – we (Cooper and us) know better, don’t we? In one leap, he was over the recliner (while reclining) and into my lap. And, when Doug was snacking in another recliner and got up, Cooper jumped up and proceeded to smell and lick the entire chair.

First night, at bedtime, no problem going into the crate with the treats enticing him. Second night, no go. He just sat, smelled the treats in my hand, turned his face away, looked at me pathetically, and decided it was not bedtime yet. He just needed a gentle nudge and then no problems the rest of the night. The next night, he retrieved Jeff’s t-shirt from the crate and proceeded to wage war with it, with growls, grunts, etc. So, when the shirt went into the crate, so did Cooper.

Very lucky for me, Cooper mostly does his ‘business’ when Doug is walking him – yeah! In actuality, Doug does most of the walking. I do most of the kitchen stuff and having a dog underfoot or staring at you the whole time is a little unnerving but we survived that too. Here's a photo of Cooper waiting patiently for Doug to come back inside from watering the plants on the deck.

Yesterday, we had our first ‘accident’ – guess we somehow missed the message – luckily, only pee on the small rug pictured above and not on the carpet but we caught him and minimized the effect.

Today, we give him back and while we will miss him, we won’t miss the early morning wake-up whines and we will certainly embrace and covet the quiet of our house.

So, Cooper – see you at Thanksgiving!

Four Weeks Already!

As we get set to celebrate our four-week anniversary with Cooper this weekend, I thought I'd take the time to tell you what an awesome family Cooper has! Not only does he have the coolest parents in the world, but he also has awesome grandparents and a fabulous great-uncle, great-aunt and cousin too!

Cooper's Grandma Joan and Grandpa Doug sent him a "Welcome to the Family" card and then Grandma Joan sewed (with love) three snoods for him! Here are two photos of Cooper wearing his snood for the first time.

For those of you who are still asking yourselves "What the heck is a snood?", it keeps the dog's ears from falling into the food bowl and getting yucky. You can buy snoods, but they wouldn't have the personal handmade touch that Cooper's have. Cooper's snoods are made of fabrics with dogs, Terps logos and oranges on them (apparently there aren't Syracuse University logoed fabrics in Maryland, so oranges had to do!). Here's a shot of the other two snoods.

Cooper also got a fourth snood in the mail from his Great-Uncle Alan, Great-Aunt Lisa and his cousin Jennifer. They also sent Cooper a bag of rawhides, which he loves, and a couple bully sticks, which he REALLY loves! Here's a photo of Cooper with his first bully stick (don't ask me what it's made of because I have no idea...I just know they smell awful when they're being chewed!).

Cooper thanks his extended family for all of the wonderful gifts -- and says he can't wait for Grandma Joan and Grandpa Doug's visit next week so he can get some more presents! :)

Cooper's First Camping Trip

For Labor Day weekend, Jeff and I had planned a camping trip to Reed Bingham State Park in Adel, Georgia. We planned to spend the weekend with Jeff's cousin Nate and his wife Amanda. They live in Tampa, so this park was a great halfway point. However, the trip was planned pre-Cooper and I've only been camping once with Jeff, so we were a bit hesitant to take the trip, but we manned up and went anyway!

Cooper slept the 4+ hour ride to Adel. When I stepped out of the car at the campground to let him pee, I was overcome by gnats. They were everywhere! They were swarming around my head -- especially my eyes and mouth -- and all around Cooper. It was disgusting. Thankfully once we got to our campsite, I sprayed myself with deet and that helped a little bit, but the only real solution was that the gnats disappeared after it got dark.

Here's a picture of Cooper hanging out while we were setting up camp. Cooper really enjoyed the gravel -- he liked to chew on it, dig deep holes in it and even eat it.

Nate and Amanda arrived after Cooper went to bed, so we didn't get to introduce him to them and their German Shepherd named Kit until Saturday morning. Here's a picture of our camp site all set up.

After the dog introduction and breakfast for all, we went hiking on a nature trail. Here are three pictures from the hike. It's shocking that Cooper's in the back of the pack in this photo because we learned he really likes to be in the front of the group with his nose to the ground!

By the time we got back to the campsite in the afternoon, it was miserably hot and the gnats were unbearable. This tent was our only savior from the bugs.

After complaining for a while about the heat and bugs and letting Cooper take a nap under a shade tree (which turned out unfortunately to be a sappy pine tree), we decided to take a trip to the 300+ acre lake in the park. Cooper was so excited to see all that water and wanted to go for a swim. Click here to watch a video of Cooper swimming for the first time. We didn't let him go too far though because there were alligators in the lake!

On Sunday, we decided we couldn't take the heat and bugs for another whole day, so we went home after a morning hike. Here are a few pictures from the hike -- one of Cooper trying to bring a huge pine cone back to the campsite and one of Nate and Kit looking for alligators. I saw my first alligator in this lake -- kind of scary!

Cooper was so exhausted from his exciting weekend that he slept the entire ride home. He got a bath this morning and a good brushing (to remove all the sap from his fur), so he's all clean and pretty again! Cooper's ready to go camping again, but he says he'll wait until it's cooler out and the bugs hibernate for the winter!

Cooper Reunites with his Brother and Dad

Cooper had an exciting Sunday afternoon! We took a road trip to Decatur so that he could play with his dad Cabot and his brother Brinkley. Here's a photo of Cooper and his dad Cabot. To give you the size differential -- Cooper is 18 pounds and Cabot is 50 pounds.

Cooper previously traveled from Indiana to Decatur when he was about 8 weeks old, at which time Brinkley stayed in Georgia and Cooper returned to Indiana. I have been wondering if they recognized each other from their early days.

Most of the time we were there, Cooper just romped around the yard with Brinkley. They were so cute together! And if it weren't for Cooper's collar or the lack of white on his back, it would have been quite difficult to tell them apart.

Click here to watch a video of Cooper and Brinkley playing. Doesn't it make you want to have two Springer puppies at the same time? They'd have so much fun! They got so dirty playing in the water bowl and in the yard that Cooper needed a bath before I would let him in the car to come home!

Unfortunately, it seems that all the playing and the bath were a bit too much for Cooper -- he got sick in the car on the way home. However, I don't think think it will stop him from wanting to play with his dad and brother again very soon! We are so thankful that they live so close!

Cooper's First Playdate

Cooper is growing up so fast! At 15 weeks old, he had his first playdate! We took him to Lesley and Rob's on Saturday to play with their lab Otto. Here's a cute pic of them during a play break.

They enjoyed chasing each other around the yard (and even switched up who the "chaser" was). When the humans went inside, Cooper decided to play in Otto's huge water bowl. When we came out less than 10 minutes later, Cooper was soaked and covered in dirt. Here's my dirty puppy zonked out after all that exciting play with Otto!

We're looking forward to many more exciting playdates with Otto!

Water, Water Everywhere!

For Cooper's second week in Georgia, we decided to test his limits with lots of water and a vet visit!

On Wednesday morning at 3am, I awoke to the sound of rain inside the house. The water supply became unconnected to the toilet in the upstairs guest bathroom and water poured through the floor to the main floor and the basement. The sound of rain that I heard was actually water pouring through the recessed lighting fixtures in the kitchen onto the hardwood floors.

Currently, most of Cooper's play areas look like this, which is rather depressing for him (and not to mention dangerous with all the nails sticking up!).

Since Wednesday, Cooper has only been able to hang out in the master bedroom (the only room in the house that didn't get damaged by water) and the deck.

With 37 professional air blowing dryers and 7 dehumidifiers, it became very hot in the house. We survived Wednesday and Thursday nights in the 90+ degree house, but we spent Friday night at a hotel. The house is finally starting to dry out and we will hopefully get rid of the dryers and dehumidifiers tomorrow!! Then the cleanup process begins. Here's a cute pic of Jeff and Cooper in the hotel.

Amazingly, Cooper has seemed unphased by this entire series of events even though everything we taught him in his first week and a half in our home has gone out the window. He's not eating his meals next to the island in the kitchen -- instead, he's been eating on the deck or in our master bathroom. He's not going outside to do his business through the basement door -- instead, he has to go out the front door. We are so thankful to have such a good puppy who didn't freak out during what has been a nightmare for us.

Cooper's First Week in Georgia

We survived our first week with a puppy! And last night Cooper FINALLY slept through the night!! This was unlike most nights this week...when we had to take him out twice in the middle of the night. We hope he keeps up this good behavior!

Here's a brief overview of a day in the posh life of Cooper during his first week in Georgia. First up, breakfast. Cooper gets very excited about food -- watch this video to see what I mean.

After breakfast, Cooper plays and sleeps until lunch. Sometimes he sleeps next to his water bowl.

And sometimes he goes into his crate all by himself to chill.

This eat, play, sleep routine is repeated until after dinner. When Jeff gets home, Cooper knows it's play time. And he loves to play with his fox!

Once Cooper tires out from all the playing, he likes to nap (yes, more napping). Who said Springers aren't lap dogs?

Somehow with all this eating, playing and napping, we fit in a walk or two around the neighborhood and obedience practice (he knows the commands for sit and down!) each day.

Cooper's Favorite Toys

During his first week in Georgia, Cooper's favorite toys are a cardboard box, a fox with a plastic water bottle insert, and squeaky rings. Here are a few videos of Cooper playing with his favorite toys.

Watch out neighborhood foxes now that Cooper's in town!

Cooper says screw the $10 toy, I like the freebie cardboard box!

Cooper Moves to Georgia

On Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the young age of 13-weeks-old, Cooper moved to Georgia. His mom's owner drove him from Indiana to Kentucky to meet Jeff. I was in D.C. for the weekend, so I only heard about the drive home from Jeff. Here's Cooper crashed out in his crate in the back of my car.

Here's Cooper at a rest stop.

After a six-hour drive, Cooper arrived at his new home in Georgia! He marked his new territory ... and no, not just outside.

Cooper's Early Days in Indiana

Cooper Robinson was born on May 16, 2010 in Indiana. His parents are Rose (Brendael) and Cabot (Georgian). He was one of three male and three female English Springer Spaniels in the litter -- five black/white and one liver/white puppies. Can you pick him out of the group? (Don't worry, neither can we!)

At eight weeks old, the puppies took a trip from Indiana to Georgia to meet their daddy Cabot. They left Cooper's brother Brinkley there to live with Cabot. Here's Cooper's eight-week photo.

During the next few weeks, all of the other puppies went to their new homes except Cooper and one of his sisters who will live with their mom permanently. Because his sister needed to start puppy class, Cooper started puppy class too -- so by the time he moved to Georgia, he already knew the verbal and visual commands for sit!

Big changes were on the horizon for Cooper at 13 weeks old...
